Exchanging Compliments in Hindi

Study of the structure and rules of usage of making and accepting compliments in Hindi.
There exist interesting differences in the use of compliments in the day to day life of people in different cultures. The organized information presented here explains the phenomenon of giving and accepting compliments in the Hindi speech community. The understanding of the similarities and differences in the sociolinguistic aspect of compliments enriches the learning and teaching of Hindi as a foreign or a heritage language.

Authentic Hindi/Urdu Audio-Video Materials for Classroom use

Hindi and Urdu represent distinct speech registers, but are taught as one language in American universities at the beginning level. Within Hindi and Urdu there are multiple speech registers. The goal of this project is to collect language data distinctive of various speech registers for use as authentic audio material in classroom. The present project is extremely important because it will for the first time collect spoken language samples of Hindi and Urdu speech registers, and make the language data available to all the national centers teaching Hindi/Urdu.

Web-Based Materials for Hindi

Development of an interactive version of the video series "Nayii Dishaayen Nae Log" (New Directions New People) for the beginning and intermediate levels of Hindi.

Web-Based Proficiency Tests for Hindi

Development of Web-based proficiency tests for Hindi including fifteen versions of a comprehensive test for evaluating listening, reading, and grammar skills. Items will range from Intermediate High to Advanced High, and the tests will be used both for self-assessment and for evaluation by the teacher.
