Serbian/Croatian Reader--Phase II

The proposed project is an intermediate level textbook, entitled Serbian/Croatian through Fiction: An annotated Chrestomathy for Intermediate -Level Students. This book is dedicated to the goal of a literary cultural approach to the teaching of language at the intermediate level. Designed for use in the second year course at the University of Chicago, it could also be used in independent studies or reading courses...It combines a comprehensive discussion of essential grammar with the best of contemporary literature.

Second Phase involves updating first 15 chapters (of 30 total), selecting the remaining passages, obtaining releases from the authors/publishers of the newly selected passages, and compiling the computerized glossary and bibliography of authors.

Recordings of Native Speakers for Aural Proficiency in Spanish Classes: Cara a Cara

This project will allow the taping of segments for Cara a Cara in Buenos Aires, Argentina during winter quarter, 2000. Taping in Argentina would provide key opportunities to expand upon the projects general themes by illustrating examples of authentic speech and settings in a Latin American context. The Argentine component could be used by both Latin American Studies and Spanish Language instructors as a teaching and study-abroad orientation resource in the college.

Tamil Videotapes

Preparation of audiotapes from Tamil-language films. Dialogues from four films were recorded, transcribed, and re-dramatized at a slower speed. Material was re-edited to include original soundtrack (at full speed), re-dramatization at slower speed), combined soundtrack (alternating speeds), and a version for speaking practice containing maximally useful vocabulary and sentence constructions.
