Hindi and Urdu represent distinct speech registers, but are taught as one language in American universities at the beginning level. Within Hindi and Urdu there are multiple speech registers. The goal of this project is to collect language data distinctive of various speech registers for use as authentic audio material in classroom. The present project is extremely important because it will for the first time collect spoken language samples of Hindi and Urdu speech registers, and make the language data available to all the national centers teaching Hindi/Urdu.
Development of a CD-ROM for use in the teacher training program: based upon samples of actual classroom work, the video will cover categoroes like beginning and ending group work, giving instructions, modeling language structures, asking questions, collecting teachers` reactions to student language production, etc.

Development of the first in a series of volumes of an anthology of twentieth-century Japanese literature for third- and fourth-year Japanese language classes. Each volume, 40 to 60 pages in length, will contain an English introduction, text with fuigana and annotations, text without kanji reading aids, and readings of each text. The first volumes includes: three pieces from Kitsunetsuki by Tawada Yoko; Saka no ue no yami by Tomioko Taeko; Tomo yo by Hayashi Kyoko; So Gyoga no namida by Inoue Yaushi; and Yume juya by Natsume Soseki.
CHIN310/510 “Business Chinese in a Cultural Context†is a new course which aims to meet the needs and increasing interests of undergraduate and graduate students for learning Business Chinese in both the Chinese language program and the professional schools at Cornell. I would like to make good use of the on-line Chinese Business news reports that the existing SCOLA channels and some other Chinese television channels provide to create companion listening exercises complementary to the textbook for the Business Chinese course. In addition, I also would like to make use of the functions of “media workbooks,†which is a template of an on-line worksheet developed by the Language Resource Center of Cornell University, to implement the project for the course.

Gajdaj's film closely follows Il'f and Petrov's Dvenadtsat' stul'ev, a classic treasure hunt adventure with a Soviet twist. Over a hundred digitized scenes preserve the original story line, giving two hours of full-motion video. The software provides links to dialogue transcripts, linguistic, historical, and cultural notes, and English glosses by Slava Paperno and Viktoria Tsimberov.
